Chapter Fourteen
They awoke the following morning to the sound of giggling children and light footsteps running through the halls. Primrose put her chemise back on and cracked open the door to find two petite brunettes playing in the corridor. Their braids swaying with every movement, the freckle-faced girls smiled and waved at Primrose.
âMy name is Jules,â the shorter one whispered.
âAnd Iâm Laurel,â the older girl said proudly, twirling her pink dress as she moved.
âWell, hello there,â she beamed. âMy name is Primrose.â
âLady Primrose?!â Laurelâs hazel eyes widened with amazement.
âThe one and only.â Primrose curtseyed and returned to the room.
âWas it a good idea to tell them your name?â Protego questioned, still sprawled out and shirtless on the bed.
âUhâ¦. Maybe not, but itâs too late now. Only fools try to change the past.â She picked his coat off the floor and threw it at him.
âMom!â shouted the voice of Jules. âLady Primrose is here! Sheâs really here!â
âShit,â she muttered, glaring in Protegoâs direction.
âThat answers my question.â He placed his arms through the openings of his jacket and fluffed his collar. âLetâs get going.â
They rushed out of the room and down the stairs. Catching sight of the man who provided them the key the night before, Protego handed him the key alongside five silver coins.
âYouâre overpaying us by a lot.â
âGive the extra coin to your girls to buy something pretty in the market; it was nice meeting you, Mrâ¦â Primrose trailed off.
âTobin. Alexander Tobin,â he replied. âThis is my inn; thank you for stayingâ¦â Mr. Tobin smiled. âLady Primrose.â
As they left the cozy inn, Primrose muttered aloud, âI will pay for this later if my parents find out.â
âOr worse. What about the merchant? And Mrs. Sharp!â
âDonât remind me. Letâs head into town, weâve got to find out about Alinaâs parents.â
Primrose and Protego walked along the trail that led into the now quiet village. Villagers were in the streets cleaning up the leftover decorations from the festival held the day before. Garbage bins were filled with napkins and paper banners, and paint flakes dusted the gravel road. The air still smelled of meat and pastries.
They returned to the shop, greeting the shopkeeper with broad smiles. A man with strawberry blonde hair was bending over to pick up a heavy box of bagels.
âYou two are back! Why hello, how can we help you today?â the shopkeeper asked with great enthusiasm.
âWe were wondering if you could answer a few questions,â Protego replied in an ominous tone.
The strawberry-haired man walked toward the shopkeeper and stood behind her in a protective pose. âAre these two botherinâ you, Lisette?â
âNo, no! They were super kind to our boy yesterday.â She smiled at them and then waved him off.
Primrose waved hello at the man. âItâs about a child. Her name is Alina, and she was found in the woods by my friend.â
Lisetteâs smile remained but no longer reached her eyes as she stared back at Primrose.
âShe appeared to be ill, but we havenât been able to find anything wrong with her.
